Logseq
Open source privacy-first knowledge graph and note-taking with local storage
About Logseq
Logseq is an open source outliner and knowledge graph application originally released in 2020. Unlike cloud-native note-taking tools, Logseq stores all notes as plain Markdown or Org-mode files directly on the user's local filesystem. There is no mandatory account creation, no cloud sync by default, and no vendor infrastructure involved in the core workflow. This makes it the strongest sovereignty option for individuals and organisations handling sensitive information in notes. The application supports bidirectional linking, a graph view for visualising knowledge connections, task management, journaling, and a plugin ecosystem built by the community. Logseq's AI features (Logseq AI, powered by OpenAI or user-configured LLM backends) are optional and configurable — users can point the AI plugin at any OpenAI-compatible API endpoint, including self-hosted LLMs running locally via Ollama or LM Studio, achieving complete end-to-end data sovereignty if desired. Logseq's sync service (Logseq Sync) is an optional paid feature for syncing notes across devices, and this does route data through Logseq's infrastructure. Users who need cross-device sync without using Logseq's servers can instead sync their Markdown files through any file sync service of their choice (Syncthing, Nextcloud, Tresorit, etc.), maintaining full control. The database version of Logseq, currently in beta, may change some of these local-first properties, and users with strict sovereignty requirements should evaluate the current release version. Being open source (AGPL-3.0 licensed), Logseq can be audited, forked, and self-hosted. The project is developed by a small US-registered company (Logseq Inc.), but since the application runs locally, the legal jurisdiction of the developer has minimal practical impact on data sovereignty for users running the local-only version. For individual researchers, consultants, and knowledge workers at regulated organisations who need a personal knowledge base that never touches vendor infrastructure, Logseq is unmatched. For teams requiring collaborative editing, real-time sync, and enterprise controls, other tools may be more operationally practical, but no other knowledge management tool offers the same sovereignty baseline.
