CrewAI
Open-source framework for orchestrating multi-agent AI systems and autonomous teams
About CrewAI
CrewAI was founded in 2023 and emerged as one of the most widely adopted frameworks for building multi-agent AI systems following the surge of interest in agentic AI. The framework defines a 'crew' as a team of AI agents, each with a specific role (Researcher, Writer, Analyst, etc.), goal, and set of tools, that collaborate through a structured task pipeline to produce a final output. The CrewAI framework is built in Python and supports integration with any LLM provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Groq, local models via Ollama), any tool (web search, code execution, API calls), and any vector database. It handles the orchestration of agent interactions, task handoffs, error recovery, and output aggregation. The framework became the de facto standard for multi-agent workflows in the Python AI ecosystem in 2024. CrewAI also offers CrewAI Enterprise and CrewAI+ cloud platforms, providing managed deployment, monitoring, and management of CrewAI-based agent systems. These cloud products enable teams to deploy agent systems without managing infrastructure themselves. For European businesses with data sovereignty requirements, the open-source framework path provides excellent control: CrewAI agents can be deployed entirely on EU infrastructure, using EU-sovereign LLM providers (Mistral, Nebius, OVHcloud), with all data remaining within the organisation's environment. The cloud platform is US-hosted and subject to US jurisdiction. CrewAI Inc. is incorporated in the United States. The open-source Apache 2.0 licence means self-hosted deployments are independent of the company's jurisdiction, which is an important distinction for EU regulatory purposes.
